Controller

The Controller at MRCI is responsible for managing the accounting department by providing information, primarily financial in nature, about all organizational activities that will assist the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Executive Officer, management, board and other users in making educated economic decisions about the organization's future.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the development of the organization's plans and programs as a strategic partner. Serve as a member of the senior management team. Attend and participate in board meetings.
  • Oversee the activities of the accounting function for the accurate and timely dissemination of financial management reports, including monthly financial statements with supporting information and comments so that managers, directors and the Board of Directors are apprised of the financial position of the agency and can compare actual income and expenditures to the projected operating budget.
  • Prepare annual budget.
  • Oversee the activities of the disbursement function and manage cash flow.
  • Oversee activities of the accounts receivable function.
  • Assure compliance with IRS regulations related to non-profit organizations, and the accurate and timely completion of all income tax returns.
  • Review all significant contracts, agreements and projections for reasonableness and accuracy.
  • Assist in the purchase of insurance programs.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of the governmental funding rules that apply to agency programs. Interpret and apply the rules so that government funding is optimized and organization complies with regulations regarding funding.
  • Consult with organization's attorney and CPA so that legal and fiscal changes are implemented to keep the agency in compliance.

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Business Administration; plus 10 years of experience in all aspects of accounting, preferably in the non-profit area.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, with demonstrated competency and wide-ranging abilities in writing and working with others.
  • Proficient knowledge of Excel, problem solving and analytical skills required.
  • Possess strong leadership, supervisory and management abilities.
  • Ability to understand and utilize software.
  • Knowledge of tax laws, both state and federal, as they apply to a non-profit agency.
  • Analytical and decision making skills.
  • Clear a MN Department of Human Services background check and physical exam.
  • A valid Driver's License and reliable transportation.
