SNAP Employment Counselor

Job Summary

The SNAP Employment and Training Counselor is responsible for the implementation of the SNAP program and will be responsible for providing vocational and employment services to assist individuals receiving food support in obtaining and retaining employment. In addition, the SNAP Employment and Training Counselor provides client assessment, job search and employment plan development, case management, support group facilitation, vocational counseling, information referral, and follow-up on each individual. As a contracted employee of MRCI, this individual is expected and required to maintain the highest ethical standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide orientation, Employment Services overview and program enrollment to SNAP participants.
  2. Prepare and maintain an individual employment plan for clients based on educational attainment, physical capacities and previous employment history. Determine and authorize for community supports to aid employability.
  3. Establish links with the employment and educational communities and support relationships with key service providers (county social service personnel, WorkForce Center Partners, higher education institutions, ABE, GED, ESL) to enhance the services provided to clients.
  4. Monitor individual progress and notify the county of non-compliance. Maintain all pertinent records.
  5. Work with clients individually or in groups on retention issues. Conduct job clubs to assist participants in finding appropriate job opportunities.
  6. Attend meetings, seminars and conferences related to employment programs to stay informed about program changes.
  7. Other duties assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualifications/Requirements:

The SNAP Employment and Training Counselor position at MRCI requires knowledge of the principles surrounding employment counseling, occupations and entry requirements, labor market conditions, training opportunities, program regulations, and the ability to establish counseling relationships with clients. In addition, the individual in this position must have the ability to conduct diagnostic interviews, analyze data, draw logical conclusions, maintain accurate records, and possess specific cultural language and background skills. A valid Driver's License and reliable transportation is also a requirement of the position.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office products.
  • Must be able to work independently and follow directions
  • Possess excellent customer service skills and demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with others.
  • Clear a MN Department of Human Services background check and physical exam to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical demands of the job.

 

Education/Experience

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in sociology, psychology, vocational counseling or other related behavioral science, or 5 years of related experience as a job counselor.
